In Progress
Black Twist is a darkly comic vision of contemporary England: part thriller, part folktale.
Firmly rooted in the European art house tradition, Black Twist is a melancholic ode to rural England and its transient border between myth and landscape. Set in the director's native town of Gloucester, this surrealist drama explores the return of a young Romani man (Rory Alexander) to his old life following his hospitalisation after the disappearance of his mother. All appears to begin again as normal when DUNLEAVY takes him in and offers his old job back at the garage. But one night, taken to a mysterious club by fellow garage-worker JOHN (Shaun Dingwall), the trauma of his mother's abandonment comes back to haunt him in ways he and the audience could never expect.
"This screenplay wakes me at night. It contains a very old connection to the Green Man rituals of Carnivale, when someone would dress up as the Green Man and emerge from the deep forest to rampage through the town. This version is really scary and powerful, as it should be. There is a beautiful expression of the unconscious energy of nature in man. It reminds me of Eraser Head and Blue Velvet and films I loved but don't see many of any more. I am disturbed and excited by it at once."
