Paper Human Being (Stage)

Holland 1941, France 1942. The same IBM Punch card technology, but two different men both convinced they are doing the right thing.

More on projectHide project details

Two near-identical stories play out simultaneously. In Autumn 1941 Civil servant Ellen De Friis breaks into a Dutch Government warehouse. In Autumn 1942, civil servant Anna Tulard breaks into a French Government warehouse.

Both are determined to destroy the warehouses’ contents, the millions of IBM punch cards representing the citizens of their respective nations, being used to identify Dutch and French Jews for ‘Resettlement in the East’ on behalf of the S.S.

But their bosses arrive before they can begin: Jacob Lentz, head of the Dutch Population Registry, René Carmille, head of the French Demographic Service.

Paper Human was performed at the Rialto Theatre Brighton in January 2021 and short-listed for the 2019 British Theatre Challenge.
