Immigration to the UK is hard. Sometimes the personal toll it takes to move to another country is forgotten. And often times family is the most impacted.
The aim of this project was to practice shooting and interviewing a participant in preparation for my big dissertation documentary.
The main subject of this short project was about national identity, and specifically national identity within immigrants to the UK in their early 20s. I wanted to find out which nationality a person identifies with if they were born in a different country but then moves in their early childhood.
This was a hard project to shoot due to the emotional weighting of the subject matter. However, it was very rewarding as I understood how to ask insightful questions but also manage the responsibility I have as a filmmaker to the participant. I was also the editor on the project, and this allowed me to develop skills working on Adobe creative cloud.
This is a topic close to my heart and something I found important to explore as I myself have struggled with this question, as I was born in Poland but then moved to the UK as a young child and was raised, and continue to live here currently.
