'Hatch' is an intense short play exploring the dark and dangerous city of Johannesburg, whilst reflecting the serious baby abandonment crisis in South Africa.
CASTING CALL
Last year I wrote a 30-minute play called Hatch about baby abandonment in South Africa. I was inspired to write about it after I discovered that ‘baby hatches’ (metal containers in walls where mothers can abandon their babies safely and anonymously) still exist. My fascination and horror compelled me to investigate the circumstances of the baby abandoners and the situations in South Africa that are generating this problem. The harrowing issues South African women face and their limited choices are not made visible to the world enough, which is why this play is a particularly important story to share.
This 30 minute play will be performed three times on the 27th & 28th of April at Burdall’s Yard in Bath. All the profit made will be going to a charity called 'The Door Of Hope’ - A charity in Johannesburg that looks after the babies that arrive through the hatch. This means that I can only cover the costs of travel and food for the rehearsals. However, I will be paying a small sum of £30 per performance day. (£60 in total).
The rehearsals for this play will be during the 16th - 26th April. Actresses will be required to be available for 5-8 hours each day for this duration of time. These hours are flexible within the day based on your availability.
I will be auditioning people from the 7th-12th of February in Bath Spa University. Please book an audition with me in-between these dates if you are interested and I will give you a small part of the script to learn.
Faith (aged18-25): Faith is very rich. Her ambition in life is to become a champion boxer, something she has been training for since her early teens. After a one night stand, Faith becomes pregnant. Her religious mother refuses to let her abort the baby, and instead agrees on adoption when the baby is born. Unfortunately, when the baby comes, the parents who were going to adopt the child no longer want it because the baby has Down's Syndrome. Faith can't have a child if she wants to pursue her career in boxing.
Although Faith is a very strong willed character, she can momentarily be broken down by Keneuwe’s constant reminder that she is making the wrong choice. However, she has a thing or two to teach Keneuwe about letting men rule her life.
