CASTING CALL

Last year I wrote a 30-minute play called Hatch about baby abandonment in South Africa. I was inspired to write about it after I discovered that ‘baby hatches’ (metal containers in walls where mothers can abandon their babies safely and anonymously) still exist. My fascination and horror compelled me to investigate the circumstances of the baby abandoners and the situations in South Africa that are generating this problem. The harrowing issues South African women face and their limited choices are not made visible to the world enough, which is why this play is a particularly important story to share.

This 30 minute play will be performed three times on the 27th & 28th of April at Burdall’s Yard in Bath. All the profit made will be going to a charity called 'The Door Of Hope’ - A charity in Johannesburg that looks after the babies that arrive through the hatch. This means that I can only cover the costs of travel and food for the rehearsals. However, I will be paying a small sum of £30 per performance day. (£60 in total).

The rehearsals for this play will be during the 16th - 26th April. Actresses will be required to be available for 5-8 hours each day for this duration of time. These hours are flexible within the day based on your availability.

I will be auditioning people from the 7th-12th of February in Bath Spa University. Please book an audition with me in-between these dates if you are interested and I will give you a small part of the script to learn.

I am looking for two black actresses:

Keneuwe (25-40): Kenuewe is a mother of four. She has very little money and very little control over her life. Throughout the play the audience learns that her husband forced her to work as a prostitute to earn money for the family. Desperate not to work as a prostitute, she kept her child when she eventually fell pregnant. Her husband knew that she did this on purpose to stop working and forces her to abandon her baby.

She loves her child and wants to keep it more than anything, but feels she has no choice but to abandon it in her situation. She is very motherly and feels a sense of duty to stop Faith from abandoning her child as she feels that Faith is making a mistake. Keneuwe believes that Faith’s wealth means she has much more fruitful options other than to abandon her child.
