Composer Callout: The Hole
The Hole is a 15-minute comedy-drama set inside a beloved Irish LGBTQ+ pub in Bristol on what could be its final day of trading.
When three close friends discover the venue is at risk of closing, they race to organise a last-minute charity drag event in an attempt to save the place that has become their second home. As the evening begins to unravel, mounting setbacks force them to confront not only the uncertain future of the pub, but what the space has meant to each of them.
At its heart, The Hole is not simply a story about a pub closing, it is about a group of people fighting to preserve the place that once gave them a sense of belonging. The pub has been a refuge, a meeting point, and a space where friendships were formed, identities were embraced and people were able to feel at home.
Balancing dry British humour with heartfelt emotional drama, the film explores themes of chosen family, queer identity, friendship and the importance of community spaces. The pub becomes a character in itself: a place of self-discovery, resilience and connection.
Tonally, the film sits between the warmth and optimism of Pride and the understated emotional honesty of The Full Monty. We are looking for a composer who can create a subtle, character-led score that supports the film’s emotional journey without overwhelming its comedy or performances.
The score should capture the emotional truth beneath the humour; the bittersweet feeling of fighting for something that has shaped who you are. We are drawn to music that feels organic and lived-in, complementing the personality and history of the pub while reflecting the individual journeys of the three central characters.
The aim is to create a score that celebrates community, leaving audiences with a sense of why spaces like this matter, and why they are worth fighting for.
We are looking for a composer who is collaborative, character-focused and excited by the opportunity to help shape the emotional world of the film.
We are ideally looking for someone based in Bristol, although we are very happy to collaborate remotely for the right person.
Collaboration Details
As this is an independently produced Master's graduation film, this is an unpaid collaboration. However, we are committed to creating a professional and collaborative process, producing a festival-ready film that everyone involved can proudly include within their portfolio.
The composer will receive full credit within the finished film and associated promotional materials, with permission to include the work within their showreel.
Collaboration will take place throughout August 2026, with the aim of final score delivery by 27th August 2026.
