Potting black is a punchline comedy hustle film about a woman in the man’s world of snooker. Set in Bristol, 1976.

Pauline wants to be able to play snooker, like the rest of the guys, free to pick a table, play the game and enjoy the sport. Sadly, this is 1976, England, and many clubs still maintain that women can’t play.
This hasn't stopped Pauline from entering clubs around the country and trying her luck, but how long can she keep this up?

Bristol based actors required for honorary paid, undergraduate UWE student short film. Potting black is a punchline comedy hustle film, about women in the world of snooker. Set in 1976, Bristol.

Pauline: 20-30’s sharp, witty, and competitive. Pauline believes that anyone should be able to play the game, regardless of their gender but not everyone feels the same. Pauline knows she can’t change the world, so when she enters the sportsman club, she is aware that outdated principles might decide her future in the sport.

STEVE: Bristol based actor 40’s+ A loveable rogue. Steve believes that there is a place for everyone in the world, but women playing snooker isn’t one of them. Steve is the local hero of his club. Medals, trophies, and all the winning attributed the sport have his name on it. Steve is ready to defend his title, should anyone decide to challenge him. Steve’s redemptive quality is that despite his outdated beliefs, winning or losing fair and square is something to be respected.

BARRY: Bristol based actor 40’s+ LEAD role Seeking actors with experience in physical comedy/and/or clowning. Barry has been unfairly overlooked, but with Pauline entering the club, and challenging everyone, Barry ceases his overdue opportunity for a fair game. Barry is the driving force for questions on moral conduct and ultimately becomes a shining beacon of hope at the climactic resolve of the film. With this leading role, we are looking for actors with strong connections to physical comedy.

Nigel: 60-70+ Nigel has been in the club for decades, we’re not sure he actually has a home to go to at night. Nigel has a lifetime worth of wisdom, and he doesn’t just pot the balls, he fires them into the pockets. Perhaps the most understated talented player. Nigel referees for the competing teams and is the voice of reason for the players when Pauline’s challenge proves reflexive

SINEAD: Bristol based actress 40’s+ LEAD role Has seen a lot of things in her time as a barmaid in Sportmans. She's seen the rise of Steve's fame and the unflinching dominance he places on the club but when Pauline shows up cue in hand, Sinead knows what she's up to. Sinead holds enough respect in the club to warrant being listened to. No one, and I mean no one messes with Sinead. Sinead holds a secret, a very useful secret for women in the sport of snooker.
